Pathfinder Doesn't Start with Career
Every teenager gets asked the same questions, usually by a well-meaning mentor or adult at a graduation party or in casual conversation: “So what do you want to do?”
Most answers revolve around what sounds right or safe. A major, school, job, or path that they’ve recently heard about. Unfortunately, many spend the next few years figuring out that it doesn’t fit who they are!
The problem doesn’t always lie in abilities and interests. Many times, it has more to do with misalignment in how they operate, driving forces, or motivation (think the engine that drives you!), or the environments that box someone into a pathway. Know how you're built to travel. Then pick the destination. That’s the idea behind Pathfinder, and it’s precisely why we don’t talk about career for the first three phases. On purpose!
WHAT IS PATHFINDER
Pathfinder is a five-phase coaching program from IRONSPRINGS Forge that helps high school students figure out what comes after graduation. College, trade, the military, straight into the workforce, entrepreneurship: All options on the table!
I built Pathfinder because I needed something like it myself. When I retired from the Navy after years in Naval Special Warfare, I had to answer the same question these students face: What now? What helped me wasn’t a list of jobs. It was someone who helped me understand how I operate, what drives me, and the kind of environment where I do my best work. Once I had that, I could accurately start to discern pathways aligned with my Next Mission and Forge the Path!
Pathfinder gives students the same process, with a deep understanding that goes far beyond aptitudes, interests, and abilities. While measuring these three areas is important, these tend to change a bit faster than a person's intrinsic wiring… or their DNA!
How the Program Works
Pathfinder runs in five phases. The first three are about the students. The last two are about the path.
Introduction and Assessment: The student gets to know their coach and then completes the TriMetrix DNA assessment, measuring behavioral styles (DiSC) and the motivators behind it (Driving Forces).
Self-Discovery: Students work through the results one-on-one with their coach, one piece at a time: How I Operate, What Drives Me, How I Connect, and My Terrain. It all comes together in the students' Trailhead Profile.
Compass Calibration: Now we look at values and fit: What Matters to Me, What Fit Looks Like, and What Guides My Choice. The students leave with a calibrated compass, the criteria any future option must meet.
Setting the Course: Students take the YouScience Aptitude assessment, measuring abilities, aptitudes, and interests (This is where most programs offered start and end! - I told you we would get there… but only after the discovery). Only now do we open careers and post-secondary options. The students test real routes against their own profile, and their Pathfinder Coach reflects that against a data-driven route-fit report (not their opinion). This process results in their Charted Course!
Forged Path Profile: This is where the action happens! We turn the course into a benchmarked, measurable plan of action. We work backward from the Objective! So, what does that mean, you ask? The coach and student look at where they want to be and work backward. You must understand the destination before planning an effective route. This phase is broken down into 5 subsections.
My Bearings. Where they stand right now: the strengths they bring, how they'll choose, and what could get in the way.
My Heading. One sentence naming the route, the start date, the place, and why it matters to them. It starts with what "right" looks like, specific enough that someone else could check it.
My Waypoints. From that objective, we plan backward: two dated checkpoints, what they'll do in the next 30 days, a response to the most likely setback, and a backup route with a clear switch point. A closed door becomes a step in the plan, not a reason to start over.
My Pack. What it will cost, how it gets covered, how they'll get there, which documents and deadlines matter, and what skills to build before day one. Parents join for this part, because this is where the family conversation happens.
My Basecamp. The people in their corner, one job for each of them, when they'll check in, and who they call first when plans change.
It all comes together in a Forged Path Profile. A one-page plan the student and parents can reference.
WHY WE WAIT ON CAREER TALK UNTIL PHASE 4
The moment a job title enters the room, the conversation changes. The career can become an unconscious anchor point driving any future discussions. We want to avoid answering for an audience, meaning answering to impress, to align with others, to chase what pays well, or to do what sounds cool in a YouTube or TikTok video. Honest self-reflection stops, and career conversations revert to guesswork, at best.
So, for the first three phases, careers are off the table. That boundary does three things.
Keeps the answers Honest: When a student isn’t trying to justify a job up front, they can accurately describe themselves, not the person that specific job “requires”. How do you handle pressure? What gives you energy? What kind of people bring out your best? Those are more accurate with nothing riding on them yet.
It builds the lens for viewing. There are thousands of pathways a student can take. Without a clear sense of who they are, every option may look equal. By the time we reach Phase Four – Setting the Course, the student has their own criteria. Options are no longer just a menu of choices and can now be accurately tested!
Empowers their decision-making: A plan handed to a student by someone else or made on guesswork is easy to abandon and may lack the necessary motivation. A plan the student builds based on their own evidence is one they are more apt to defend, adjust, and own. When a Pathfinder student lands on a pathway, they can explain WHY IT FITS IN THEIR OWN WORDS.
MORE THAN A PLAN
The plan matters, but it isn’t the most valuable thing a student takes home. Inevitably, certain plans can change unexpectedly due to external circumstances. What lasts is the Navigation System: a clear picture of where they’re headed and a decision-making framework they know how to use. The next time they face a big decision, they won’t be starting from scratch. They’ll know how to recalibrate the compass and chart a new course.
FORGE THE PATH
If you’re a student who keeps getting asked “what do you want to do?” and that answer isn’t crystal clear yet, that’s not a problem. That’s the starting point!
Pathfinder is built for exactly that!
